Stocking multi-gig and NVMe accessories: a buyer's guide for UK PC shops

Multi-gig networking and NVMe storage accessories are one of the easiest categories to get wrong on a shop counter, and one of the easiest to get right once you know what actually drives returns. This is a buying guide for independent PC shops, repair counters, and system integrators deciding what to add to the shelf, written from the other side of the counter: what customers actually ask for, what causes comebacks, and where the margin genuinely sits.

The category that's actually growing

Gigabit Ethernet stopped being the ceiling years ago, and the customers who notice first are exactly the ones who walk into an independent shop rather than order blind online: NAS owners, homelabbers, small studios moving large files, and anyone who's just put an NVMe drive in a machine and discovered the network is now the slow part. A 10GbE card that needs a driver their NAS OS doesn't have. A USB enclosure that's "40Gbps" on the box but capped by a cheap bridge chip inside it. A quad M.2 card that needs a BIOS setting their motherboard doesn't offer. None of these are faulty units. They're mismatches that a chipset-literate counter conversation prevents before the sale, not after the return.

This is the actual argument for stocking product where the chipset is named on the box and in the listing, not a vague "compatible with everything" claim: it turns a returns problem into a five-minute conversation at the point of sale.

Where the margin sits

Multi-gig NICs, SATA and NVMe expansion cards, and enclosures carry healthier margin than commodity cables and adapters, because they're solving a specific problem for a customer who already knows they need it rather than competing on being the cheapest generic option in a search result. The interconnect niche, U.2, U.3, OcuLink, SFF-8643, and the adapters between them, is thinner still on competition, since most distributors don't carry it at all, which is exactly why it's worth a shelf slot even at lower unit volume than your fastest-moving cables.
