AQC113 vs RTL8127: the two 10GbE chipsets, honestly compared
Nearly every affordable 10GbE card sold in the UK right now runs on one of two controllers: Aquantia's AQC113 (Aquantia was bought by Marvell, so you'll see it badged either way) or Realtek's RTL8127. We stock cards built on both, and we'd rather tell you the real differences than pretend one is strictly better. It isn't. They trade off against each other in ways that matter depending on what you're building.
Maturity and driver support
AQC113 has been shipping in consumer and prosumer cards for several years. That head start shows up as broad driver support: it's in-kernel on Linux, TrueNAS and Unraid bring it up without extra steps, and Windows has carried a driver for it for a long time. If you're building something today and want the safest possible bet on "it will just work" on whatever operating system you throw at it, AQC113 is that bet.
RTL8127 is newer, and driver support is still catching up in places. Recent kernels handle it fine, and current Windows builds pick it up, but if you're running an older NAS OS, an LTS Linux distribution that's a few years behind, or anything with an aging kernel, check specifically before buying. This isn't a permanent gap, driver support only improves with time, but it's real today.
Power and heat
This is the clearest, most consistent difference between the two. AQC113 runs hot enough that nearly every card built on it ships with an active fan, and that fan is not optional decoration: pull it off and the chip will throttle or fault under sustained load. RTL8127 runs meaningfully cooler, and several card designs get away with a passive heatsink alone, no fan, no noise.
If the card is going into a well-ventilated desktop tower, AQC113's fan is a minor irritation at worst. If it's going into a NAS chassis with limited airflow, or anywhere you care about fan noise (a media PC, a quiet home office), RTL8127's lower heat output is the more meaningful advantage of the two chipsets, more meaningful than the price difference that usually gets top billing.
Price
RTL8127 cards undercut AQC113 cards by a noticeable margin, often by £10 to £15 at the same tier of card. That gap is why RTL8127 is the chipset behind most of the "10GbE under £100" builds. It isn't a rounding error, but it's smaller than the driver-maturity and heat differences above, and we'd rather you pick the chipset that fits your operating system and airflow first, then let price break the tie.
Which one to actually buy
Pick AQC113 if you're running an older NAS OS or Linux kernel, if you want the chipset with the longest track record, or if fan noise genuinely doesn't bother you. Pick RTL8127 if your OS is current, you care about heat and noise, or the price gap matters to your build. Neither chipset locks you out of a 5GbE, 2.5GbE, or gigabit fallback: both negotiate down automatically if the other end of the link can't do full 10GbE.
There's no wrong answer buried in a spec sheet here. There's a real trade-off, and now you know which side of it you're on.
